Another great conference.
There’s always so much I am touched by after this conference that I don’t even know how to put it into word. But one of my favorite things about the conference is this…..
If you are familiar with RDH UOR you know you can get up to 20 continuing education (CE) courses. And all courses at this conference are 1-2 CE credits (1-2 hours long). Okay so that means you can take up to 4 classes a day. Example: I took a total of 7 classes in two days. 7 different speakers. 7 different topics. Each serving a purpose showing its link to dental hygiene. 7 classes, 7 courses, 7 speakers, 7 different learning experiences. And I will tell you that what I love about this conference overall is the human experience that is experienced.
And what I mean by that is, a lot of these courses are personal to the speaker, which has led them to speaking on the specific topic and learning and discovering how it is connected to dental hygiene and how dental professionals can become aware of these topics and its link to oral hygiene. They are advocating on something that can help save a person's life. They are giving motivation. They are sharing their stories. They are sharing pieces of their lives. And as much as we are all at the conference for dental hygiene & to be “professional” & to be the upmost professional hygienist we can be, staying up to date on the newest discoveries and what is best for both patient and hygienist. This conference reminds me that we are all human. And human life things happen. 4 out of the 7 courses I listened too shared true-life experiences that happen in life. And that reminded me that yes, we are in a medical profession, and science is a very big thing, however, so is life and life happens. And there is so much beauty in life and dental hygiene.
I love this conference so much because the speakers who speak, all 7 were very different but they each bring a unique piece to dental hygiene, and it all plays a role in our profession. But also, what I love about this conference is these speakers show you how to get back up again. Whether they know they deliver that message or not, they do. They show perseverance, resilience, they show what it means to not only fight for yourself but for a profession as well and that is what I absolutely LOVE about this experience at RDH UOR. Humans, women talking about their lives & their families. Showing other young women & men that you can have a family & be a professional at the same time. That you can get back up again after life life’s. And you can be yourself. And you can still reach & teach people no matter what you are speaking on.
I learned about EOE this weekend. Never heard about it before, but it is Eosinophilic Esophagitis and I now know how to help patients if I see or hear the signs just by simply listening to a patient. I learned that osteoporosis could affect the mouth. And certain signs of recession to look out for & now talk to patients about having a bone density test. I just love that this conference shows real life. In a world that is trying to run from life, RDH UOR reminds me & shows me that life is worth living for and each & every single one of us on this earth has a purpose & a divine mission and we are all meant to be here. And we all play a beautiful role in this life. Life is going to life. But don’t let that life keep you down because someone somewhere needs to hear your voice and you never know who will keep going because of you.
RDH UOR makes me extremely proud and happy to be a dental hygienist and to be a part of an amazing profession that truly cares about people and cares about health and that is making a difference. Dental hygiene is the place to be and if you are someone who hasn't found a good dental office, go back out there and find one because there are great offices out there that truly want to help patients. And if you are a hygienist reading this feeling completely the opposite of what I am saying, change your environment. Go to this conference or go pay for a quality CE course, one that you have to physically attend. I believe that makes a huge difference. Be open minded. Be yourself. We need to be around people. We need people. We need community. We need each other. <3
So my biggest take aways:
Life will life
You/we are all unique
We each serve a purpose
We are in this together
The world is a better place than what we think
A simple conversation can spark life into another’s life
Growth is not betrayal
You are here for a reason
Dental hygienists are preventing AND detecting disease
Dental hygiene is the future to health. Know who your provider is & who you are working with & make sure you are seeing a dental hygienist at least twice a year (& for some, it may be more than twice a year)
Keep believing in yourself
Shine on yall <3
Namaste,
With love; Morgan, RDH BSDH
